The Avalon texture pack for Minecraft 1.20.2 all the way down to 1.18 is a welcome addition to the collection of resource packs. Every new pack needs to prove its worthy of possibly replacing Minecraft’s default textures. This raises the question: how unique can a texture pack still be when new texture packs are created and shared on a daily basis?
Fortunately, Avalon 32x does not disappoint! As becomes clear from a comparison between vanilla Minecraft and Avalon’s textures, the latter packs more pixels per square Minecraft-meter. Going from 16x textures to 32x sounds like double the amount of pixels, but when you think about it, it’s a 4x improvement. Vanilla Minecraft allows for 256 pixels per block face (16^2) whilst Avalon brings 1024 pixels (32^2).
This way, the creator of Avalon is able to pack way more detail into the pack’s texture than you could ever have with Vanilla textures. Blocks that benefit from this are mainly the ones that lack detail in vanilla. The additional pixels allow for leaves to appear more realistic and grainy textures such as gravel to actually feature larger and smaller pebbles. Azalea leaves now feature pretty pink flowers.
Shading
It is near impossible to add shading to textures when working with the default 16x resolution. Unsurprisingly, shading is the first thing you will notice when installing and enabling the Avalon resource pack. The texture pack features subtle gradients and said shading, which in return add depth to the block textures.
And that’s not all: this pack also features neat 3D models for some blocks and some mobs. Let’s also remember this pack is a work in progress, it’s about 80 percent finished as of writing this review and seems to be getting regular updates. The creator promises to keep this up. Obviously, it’s a huge task to create both unique as well as matching sprites and textures for every single block and item in Minecraft.
Optifine features
Besides neat textures, itschawk (the creator) also makes clever use of Optifine features. An example of such features is the use of biome dependent textures for leaves. Spruce leaves will naturally be covered in snow when spawned or placed inside of a snowy biome. The pack also includes texture variants which will alternate randomly depending on the block you place them on.
Take grass. Grass comes in various lengths with the Avalon texture pack. It can be only a few pixels tall, but taller variants also make their appearance throughout the world. All in all, the Avalon resource pack makes for a great addition to your Minecraft world. Not made for a specific type of Minecraft player, anyone from a creative builder to a hardcore survival player will enjoy this pack.
